Salvatore DeSanto was a Sicilian inmate featured in Oz. Portrayed by Phil Campanella.
Character Summary[]
He is an inmate who acts as a background prisoner until he is falsely accused of drugging inmate Augustus Hill. After the accusation, Hill’s mentor and Homeboy leader Burr Redding arranges for his food to be mixed with a fatal amount of LSD and as a result DeSanto dies of brain failure instantly.

DeSanto first appears in the office of unit manager Tim McManus who tells the Sicilians that Peter Schibetta is being released from the psych ward. At dinner one night, Frank Urbano, who is in charge, states that the Sicilians should get back into the drug trade by whacking Redding. DeSanto points out that Redding doesn't know how to die. Urbano tells him that anyone can die. Following that statement, DeSanto’s head starts to spin. His food has been mixed with a fatal amount of LSD by the black inmates in the cafeteria on orders of Redding and he dies of brain failure immediately. The Homeboys competently clean the kitchen so that there is no physical evidence of lacing his food with LSD.
Notes/Trivia[]
- Though it is expressly stated that he was given a lethal dose of LSD, this is unlikely to be the case. The LD50 (average amount needed for a lethal dose) for LSD is extremely high.
- DeSanto reacting instantly is also unrealistic, as the drug takes some time to produce effects.
